Whilst working as a pianist at a primary school in 2005 (in the London borough of Richmond), and as a music tutor at a youth centre ('07, Kingston), I realised I would like to help children to create/perform music. Whilst listening to music such as Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells, I often thought 'Wouldn't it be amazing if a group of children could perform this?!' I started working at a different after-school club in Jan '22, and in late '22, the Music4Ed idea popped up in my head again, albeit from a slightly different angle.
Connecting children & teachers in schools with student / professional musicians to enrich music education
Fundraise for a newer piano
Raise funds for musical instruments, hardware, software, trips
I work at an after-school club at a primary school. They have (at least) 2 *old* upright pianos, and 2 halls; including one where I watched the end of year production in July '22.
... in the larger hall, and people (parents…) were charged a set ticket fee to attend?
... Pay What They Could Afford to keep access open and equal?
... part of that money (minus agreed fees for performers) was used by the school to buy resources, go on trips, pay for visiting external professionals?
... music students from a local university performed?
... professional musicians performed?
... were programmed termly, monthly, fortnightly or weekly?
... commission a composer to write a piece for that school for those performers?
... some of the children performed (as well)?
... it wasn’t only piano music?
... it wasn’t only this school?
... the organisation that organised the performers & schools, commissioned the music & curated the concerts was called Music4Ed?
